WHAT'S IN A NAME...........

The Suzuki Cultus is a supermini car from 1983 to 2016. Formally introduced to Japan in 1983 and ultimately sold in seven countries and marketed worldwide as the Suzuki Swift.
The original 1983 first generation Suzuki Swift GL introduced in Australia looked curiously similar to the original Maurti 800 with the only difference being that the Australian car was a three door hatch while Maruti 800 was a five door hatch. However, the original Maruti 800 was based on the 1979 Suzuki Alto. The Maruti 800/Suzuki Alto became Suzuki Mehran in Pakistan
In 1989 Suzuki Cultus went to Pakistan as Suzuki Khyber.
Maruti Suzuki Swift hatchback was launched in India in May 2005.. The Maurti Suzuki Swift DZire was uniquely developed in India as a compact sedan when the GOI brought in the tax concession on the sub 4 meter compact segment. Finaly in its 2025 facelift, it no longer looks like Swift with a boot, The DZire now looks a car in its own form.
The first company to seize the sub 4 meter opportunity was Tata with its Indica with a boot named as Indigo CS. GM in the meanwhile planned to introduce its Chevrolet Essentia which was the Chevrolet Beat with a boot but it ultimately didnt make it.
What followed still continues
Swift Dzire from the Swift
Xcent from the Grand i10
Aura from the i10 Nios
Aspire from the Figo
Amaze from the Brio
Tigor from the Tiago
The Suzuki Cultus Swift GLX sedan came to India as the Maruti 1000. The same became Suzuki Margalla in Pakistan. The Maruti 1000 was kept below the Esteem and remained in production until March 2000 and was eventually discontinued due to low sales.
The Suzuki Cultus Crescent came to India as the Maruti Esteem in Sedan form which was sold in Europe, Australia and many Asian countries as the Suzuki Baleno.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno sedan(Suzuki Cultus Crescent) came to India replacing Maruti Esteem. Maruti Suzuki Baleno production ceased in 2007 to make way for the Suzuki SX4. The second-generation Maruti Suzuki Baleno returned in 2022 as a hatchback with its Toyota twin the Glanza.
Suzuki SX4, with cosmetic changed from its international market version, sold in India as a sedan, while the Suzuki SX4 Cross (crossover hatchback) became the Suzuki S-Cross. The SX-4 became the Baleno Neo in Indonesia.
Suzuki Ertiga came to India in a completely new avatar than its international version. The Indian Ertiga was specifically designed for India. The international crossover style version was launched separately as the XL-6 which in the international version is called XL-7
In the meanwhile Suzuki Celerio came in Japan originally as a rebadged Suzuki A-Star. Second generation Maruti Suzuki Celerio came to India as a standalone model. Simultaneously the Suzuki A-Star also came to India as a standalone model. That curiously became basically the same car with two different names from the same manufacturer.
The Suzuki Celerio has reached Pakistan as Suzuki Cultus. This even though the Celerio and Cultus are two different cars. Pakistanis got the Cultus as Khyber and now the Celerio as Cultus.
