JAUHAR: A RITUAL SUICIDE VERSION OF HONOUR KILLING

Problem is that jauhar was NOT a "choice that the woman made", it was a deeply embedded false sense of "honour" only for women of Rajput clans. Bizarrely, Rajput men rode into battle and Rajput women did jauhar, as if it was an understood fact that no man will return. The view of jauhar as a purely autonomous, self-sacrificing choice ignores the immense patriarchal and cultural pressure within feudal Rajput society. Women operated within a strict honor economy (an-mardan, or clan pride), where their bodies were viewed as the ultimate physical repository of a lineage's purity. RAJPUT WOMEN NEVER HAD A CHOICE OF NOT CHOOSING JAUHAR.
