THE ROYAL LADY OF PAKISTAN AIR FORCE

Begum Farhat Noor Khan was the wife of Air Marshal Nur Khan, one of Pakistan’s most legendary military and civil leaders (Commander-in-Chief of the PAF and Governor of West Pakistan).

Begum Farhat Noor Khan (full name: Princess Farhat Sultan Begum) was the eldest daughter of Captain Aziz-ul-Mulk Shahzada Sultan Aziz of the Durrani Dynasty (specifically the Sadozai clan). This was the royal house of the Afghan Empire, founded by Ahmad Shah Durrani.

Begum Farhat Noor Khan used her royal and military standing to institutionalize social welfare within the Pakistan Air Force. In 1965, she founded the PAF Women Association(PAFWA), essentially creating a "royal-standard" support system for the families of servicemen, which remains a pillar of the Pakistani military social structure today

Air Marshal Malik Nur Khan was an alumnus of the Royal Indian Military College (RIMC) in Dehradun and later commissioned into the Royal Indian Air Force in 1941. Nur Khan took over as the Commander-in-Chief of the PAF on July 23, 1965, just weeks before the full-scale war with India broke out.

As Managing Director of PIA (1959–1965 and later in the 70s), he turned it into one of the best airlines in the world. He famously helped set up Emirates Airline by providing PIA technical staff and aircraft in the 1980s.

In his later years, he was remarkably candid and self-critical. He famously went on record stating that the 1965 war was "unnecessary" and was provoked by Pakistan's "Operation Gibraltar," a rare admission for a former Pakistani military chief.
