JAS 39 GRIPEN AND THAI ROYALTY

 Her Majesty Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana of Thailand (aged 48) has entered advanced fighter jet flight training on the JAS 39C/D Gripen at Wing 7 in Surat Thani, aiming to clear her solo flight.


If she completes the solo check, Her Majesty will become the first reigning queen in history to pilot a supersonic fighter jet solo.

Prior to stepping into the Gripen cockpit, Queen Suthida underwent simulator sessions at Don Mueang and conversion training on the Aero L-39 Albatros advanced jet trainer at Kamphaeng Saen.

Queen Suthida holds an extensive civil and military aviation background:

Holds a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, with type ratings on the Boeing 737-400 and 737-800.

She completed RTAF and Royal Thai Army aviation courses, logging hours on the Cessna T-41, Pacific Aerospace CT-4E, and Pilatus PC-9.

Queen Suthida holds the highest officer ranks across all three branches of the Royal Thai Armed Forces:

General in the Royal Thai Army (appointed December 2016)

Admiral in the Royal Thai Navy (appointed March 2025)

Air Chief Marshal in the Royal Thai Air Force (appointed March 2025)

She also serves as the Commander of the Special Operations Unit of the Royal Security Command

Visited F 7 Såtenäs (the Skaraborg Wing) to inspect and engage with Sweden's JAS 39 Gripen fighter aircraft operations. Took to the air aboard a Saab JAS 39 Gripen twin-seat trainer variant for a familiarization flight, experiencing high-G maneuvers over Swedish airspace.

Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya (born January 8, 1987) is the only daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) and his former consort, Sujarinee Vivacharawongse. She holds the rank of Major General in the Royal Thai Army.
